Herrington Harbor and Rock Hall, MD

June 29 - 30, 2015

On Monday morning we waved goodbye to Ken and Ann as they pulled out of Zhaniser’s Yachting Center on their way south to start their trip up the Potomac River for a visit to DC. We left soon after and as we got out of the Patuxent River we pointed north to continue our great loop travels.

Cove Point Lighthouse, now used as a bed and breakfast -
tanks on horizon are probably for oil - there was a refinery just off shore
We saw lots of rays in the water but they were just under the surface so we didn’t get a good photo. We would see a splash and then maybe the points of their fins above the surface. All the photos I took just showed a nice view of the water.

The marina at Herringtons, on Herring Bay, was big and a really beautiful spot. We enjoyed the walkways, the pool and they even had a West Marine on site. What more could a boater ask for? Actually - the marina also had a "Gedunk" which is a Navy term for a snack bar. John did a double take and then realized he hadn't heard that term since he was on the Navy a long time ago.

Coral bells and hydrangea
Very inviting walkways along the waterfront

The weather forecast looked pretty bad with high winds and thunderstorms predicted for the next day so we knew we would stay an extra night. This worked out great because my brother John was driving over from Virginia to meet us for lunch. This also was great because at the last minute we decided to go to a walk-in medical center to check on a bruise-like spot on John’s ankle that was getting worse. We got a ride over from the marina and my brother John, who lives in Virginia, met us there and brought us back. Turns out the bruise was a fungal rash, yikes! The doctor gave him a prescription to clear it up and then we all went to the Dockside Restaurant for lunch.

It was so good to connect with my brother John along the way!

We set out on Wednesday morning after a night of intense thunder storms and heavy rain. At one point the wind blew so loud that it sounded like a train was coming. The day was hazy and we were going in our current favorite direction: north.

Thomas Point Shoals Lighthouse

Curve at the Annapolis end of the William P Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge
crossing the Chesapeake

Captain John is sure we can make it under this one.
We arrived at the port of Rock Hall Landing just before noon. It was a nice smooth ride up with a light south wind on our stern. This is an old fishing town and a very quiet end of the road place.  It was over half a mile walk into Main Street. We went to the post office first so John could mail his oil samples. We saw an old fashioned big wheeled bike and at first I though it was a decoration for the old drug store and ice cream emporium. Then we saw two more and we realized that the people coming out of the store were the bikers. They were with a group of over a hundred people who were on either a fifty or a hundred mile ride using these vintage style bikes.

Big wheels!

"Little Free Library" along the street - guess you take a
book  if you would like
Waterman's Restaurant is a fixture at the waterfront - it was conveniently
near our dock and we went there for a light supper
